Welcome Sara Ten Siethoff as Deputy Director of the Division of Investment Management
Sarah ten Siethoff’s appointment as Deputy Director of the Division of Investment Management was announced today by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Ms. ten Siethoff will continue to serve as the Associate Director of the Division’s Rulemaking Office, a position she has held since 2018. In addition to her role as Deputy Director, she will continue to serve in this capacity.

Gary Gensler, the chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission, expressed his gratitude to Sarah ten Siethoff for accepting the position of Deputy Director of the Division of Investment Management. As the Acting Director of the Division as well as the head of its Rulemaking Office, Sarah has provided guidance that has been extremely helpful. Her work for the public good benefits from her experience, sound judgment, and capable leadership; I eagerly anticipate the many contributions she will make in the coming year.”

According to William Birdthistle, who serves as the Director of the Division of Investment Management, “Sarah ten Siethoff provides the Division of Investment Management with extraordinary expertise as well as public service.” We are extremely appreciative of her willingness to serve in both roles, as we rely heavily on her leadership in both her roles as Deputy Director of the Division and as head of our Rulemaking Office.
Ms. ten Siethoff stated that she was “honored to serve the Commission in this new additional role and to continue working with the talented staff in the Division of Investment Management to advance the Commission’s important mission.” “I am honored to serve the Commission in this new additional role,” she said.

During the period beginning in January 2021 and ending in December 2021, Ms. ten Siethoff was the Interim Director of the Division of Investment Management. In 2008, she became a member of the Division of Investment Management after having previously worked in the Rulemaking Office in a variety of roles, including Deputy Associate Director and Assistant Director, among others.
Ms. ten Siethoff has been recognized with a number of awards, including the Manuel F. Cohen Award, the Excellence in Leadership Award, and the Philip Loomis Award, among others. Ms. ten Siethoff worked as an associate for the law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP in their New York and Washington, DC offices before she started working for the agency.

She graduated from Yale Law School with a Juris Doctor degree, Yale University with a Master of Arts in International Relations degree, and the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
In addition, Mr. Birdthistle chose Ms. Kaitlin Bottock and Mr. Thoreau Bartmann to serve as Co-Chief Counsels of the Division of Investment Management, which brought the total number of members on his senior leadership team to four.
